Tesla’s Robotaxi Rollout Fails to Gain Momentum in Texas

Tesla Inc.’s robotaxi ambitions in Texas have been met with underwhelming results, according to data from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. As of June 16, only 69 Tesla vehicles had been converted into autonomous taxis in the state.
This number is significantly lower than those of rival companies, such as Cruise, which has reportedly deployed over 200 robotaxis in Austin. However, despite lagging behind its competitors, Tesla’s robotaxis are priced competitively, with some listings offering rides for just $0.12 per mile.
While the pace of Tesla’s rollout may be slow, experts point out that the company is focusing on testing and refining its technology rather than rapidly deploying vehicles to market. “Tesla’s approach has been to prioritize quality over quantity,” said a source close to the company.
The robotaxi market in Texas is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, with several major players vying for market share. As competition heats up, Tesla will need to accelerate its rollout and improve its pricing strategy if it hopes to remain competitive.
