National Microbiology Lab Seeks New Leader Amid Leadership Shuffle

Canada’s only Biosafety Level 4 laboratory, the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, is once again searching for a new leader. Vice-President Jason Kindrachuk confirmed that he will be stepping down from his position on June 28.
This marks the second leadership change at the lab in recent years. The previous director, Artur Gusdal, left his post in 2022 after a brief tenure. The lab’s high-security designation and cutting-edge research mandate require stringent qualifications and experience for its leaders.
Kindrachuk, who has been with the laboratory since 2010, will remain available as an advisor to assist with the transition process. His departure is expected to have minimal disruption to ongoing research projects, according to a spokesperson from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
As one of the few labs in the world capable of handling highly infectious pathogens, the National Microbiology Laboratory plays a critical role in global health security. The search for Kindrachuk’s replacement is likely to be rigorous and thorough, given the lab’s unique requirements and responsibilities.
